Police DGP Sanjeev Marik addressing Media over Arrest of Maoist Leader Sabyasachi Panda

Berhampur: Odisha’s most wanted naxals leader and dreaded outlaw Sabyasachi Panda was arrested form Gate Bazar area in Berhampur. He was apprehended in a joint operation by Berhampur police and officials of state intelligence wing last night at about 1 am, said state DGP Sanjeev Marik. Panda was carrying a cash reward of Rs five lakh on his head.Speaking to scribes here Marik said our officials barged into the house which belongs to one of his relatives in Gate Bazar area and nabbed Panda where he came to took shelter. “During the raid we have recovered an automatic pistol, some ammunitions, Rs 2 lakh cash, gold of half kg, a laptop, ten cell phones, four computer hard disks and five pen drives from Panda’s possession. Basing on the information received from intelligence wing the raid headed by Barhampur SP Ashish Singh,” said Marik adding this is a victory for state as well as nation.

For security reasons the police chief did not reveal the name of the person who provided him shelter in Berhampur.“The major cases he was implicated are the loot of state armory in Nayagarh district in March 2008, assassination of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his disciples in August 2008, abduction of two Italian tourists in March 2012. He was also responsible for killing 25 police personnel and 34 civilians,” said Marik.As many as 62 cases registered against the top maoist leader in four districts including Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal.In 1995 Panda joined naxals outfit CPI (M) and was active for last two decades mostly in southern districts in Odisha. Following a face off triggered by the abduction of two Italian tourists Panda parted his ways with CPI (M) and formed a new outfit called Odisha Maowadi Party in 2012. Currently he was leading another red wing named as CPI-Marxist-Leninist-Maoist (CPI-MLM).Riddled by the rising bloody massacre by the dreaded outlaw massive combing operations lead by former DGP Prakash Mishra was launched last year. In three encounters Panda managed to give police a slip. But police has caught hold five close aides of his associates. At that time strong rumors we riffing that the mao leader would surrender before the law. Being isolated by his counterparts Panda’s outfit became weakens which resulted in his involvement in reduced violence activities during last year.
