Bhubaneswar: The
National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to Superintendent of Police of Jajpur over lathi charge in recruitment rally in
the December last year. Acting on the complaint of rights activist Akhand, the
Commission has directed the police officer to file an action taken report(ATR)
within four weeks time in the matter.
It is noted here
that several unemployed youth were injured when police resorted to lathi-charge
at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Jajpur, where a Nijukti Mela(Recruitment rally)
was held on 19 December 2013. About 5,000 unemployed youth from Korei,
Danagadi, Rasulpur, Sukinda, Dharmasala and Vyasanagar blocks had arrived at
the Nijukti Mela at the stadium here in the morning hours to register their
names at the various emolument stalls put up by some industrial units of
Kalinga Nagar.
However, to their dismay, the job aspirants found that of the 11 leading
industrial units in the district, only three companies had opened their stalls.
Trouble started when the representatives of the three companies set a condition
that candidates who do not have 2-7 years of job experience need not register
their names.
This triggered heated arguments between the company representatives and the
candidates most of whom had never had the privilege of being employed anywhere.
Without discussing to the youth, police resorted to lathi-charge in which over
hundreds of youths were injured, alleged Akhand.
Again Police has registered a case against nine unemployed youth at Jajpur Road
police station and arrest four them on 21 December 2013 and sent to the jail,
said Akhand.
The Petitioner prayed before NHRC to intervene into the matter and order for
compensation to the victims and Departmental action and criminal cases who are
responsible for lathi charge.
