Lok Sabha Elections 2014 Schedule
NHRC sought report from Jajpur SP over lathi charge on jobseekers
Bhubaneswar: The
National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to Superintendent of Police of Jajpur over lathi charge in recruitment rally in
the December last year. Acting on the complaint of rights activist Akhand, the
Commission has directed the police officer to file an action taken report(ATR)
within four weeks time in the matter.
It is noted here
that several unemployed youth were injured when police resorted to lathi-charge
at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Jajpur, where a Nijukti Mela(Recruitment rally)
was held on 19 December 2013. About 5,000 unemployed youth from Korei,
Danagadi, Rasulpur, Sukinda, Dharmasala and Vyasanagar blocks had arrived at
the Nijukti Mela at the stadium here in the morning hours to register their
names at the various emolument stalls put up by some industrial units of
Kalinga Nagar.
However, to their dismay, the job aspirants found that of the 11 leading
industrial units in the district, only three companies had opened their stalls.
Trouble started when the representatives of the three companies set a condition
that candidates who do not have 2-7 years of job experience need not register
their names.
This triggered heated arguments between the company representatives and the
candidates most of whom had never had the privilege of being employed anywhere.
Without discussing to the youth, police resorted to lathi-charge in which over
hundreds of youths were injured, alleged Akhand.
Again Police has registered a case against nine unemployed youth at Jajpur Road
police station and arrest four them on 21 December 2013 and sent to the jail,
said Akhand.
The Petitioner prayed before NHRC to intervene into the matter and order for
compensation to the victims and Departmental action and criminal cases who are
responsible for lathi charge.

Bharat Ratna Demand for Biju Patnaik
Bhubaneswar:
Odisha should recommend the demand for conferring Bharat Ratna to legendary
Odia freedom fighter & former Chief Minister of the state, late Biju
Patnaik.
The Govt of Odisha has named several institutions after the
name of Biju Patanaik. They include the Biju
Patnaik Airport
at Bhubaneswar,
the Biju Patnaik University of Technology, etc. Also his son Naveen Patnaik
made his birthday 5 March as the Panchayat Raj
Divas, a holiday in Odisha in his memory. Biju Patnaik has been conferred
several prestigious civilian honours in Indonesia
and Russia.
Intellectuals believe that the State Government should have followed suit and
endorsed the name of Late Biju Patnaik for the title as he represents the pride
and dignity of billions of Odias around the globe.
Perhaps no other leader occupied the imagination of the people of Orissa like Biju Patnaik; freedom fighter, pilot, industrialist, politician and philanthropist. He was Orissa’s restless son and became a legendary hero. His ability to create confidence among people and inspire them was phenomenal. He had a remarkable capacity to transmit his cheerful strength to others.
Biju was basically a secular man and was an instinctively nationalist as his hero Napoleon. Like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, he navigated by the four immutably fixed stars of his convictions – national unity, democracy, secularism and the end of imperialism. Sir Julian Huxley, UNESCO’S First Director General and also a Kalinga Prize Winner, had described Biju Patnaik as a “remarkable Indian whose adventures would fill a book”. In an obituary reference, the prestigious magazine The Economist says”. It is worth writing about Biju Patnaik for at least two reasons. His long life can be read as something of a history of India back to the time when the country was run by the British. And he gave Indian politics a rare fresh of colour”.
The Encyclopedia Britannica described Biju as “Indian Politician; who parlayed his fame as a World War-II aviator, anti-British freedom fighter and commercial airline entrepreneur into a political career, notably as Chief Minister of Orissa State, 1961-63 and 1990-95”.
